NP328 circa 1910
Ronald E. Olmstead submitted this photo from a family album. His grandfather, Isaac Lewis Olmstead, is either second from left or standind on the far right. The picture dates from approximately 1910.
In this picture, 328 is right around five years old. It looks considerably different than its current circa-1950 appearance. Several things have changed:
- In 1913, due to new Federal regulations, the original headlight was replaced by an electric headlight. This involved moving the bell forward to make room for the steam turbine generator, casting a new smokebox front with mounting lugs for the headlight platform, and adding platforms and grab irons as required.
- In 1919, it was upgraded from the simplex air compressor to a cross-compound air compressor. Total compressor output more than doubled, due to more efficient use of steam. It appears the air brakes were also upgraded from ET to 6-ET. This completely changed the layout of the running boards, air reservoirs, brake valves, and plumbing.
- At some point the wooden cab was sheathed in steel.
- The tender is almost certainly different.
