LST&T 101 is a one thousand horse power model NW2 diesel-electric locomotive designed for switching cars in railroad yards. The Electro-Motive Division of General Motors (EMD) built 1119 between 2/39 and 12/49. 101 was built in February 1948, receiving builder's number 5287. It was built with a V-12 567A diesel engine, which the LST&T later upgraded to a 567AC. It has no m. u. capability, having been built with a mechanical rather than electric throttle.

The Lake Superior Terminal & Transfer was a terminal switching railroad in Duluth, jointly owned by the Great Northern and the Northern Pacific. Its locomotives were painted in the colors of the Great Northern - the same colors 101 wears today.

101 was acquired by MTM in 1986. It was used to haul passengers on our first operated regularly scheduled passenger trains on the old Northern Pacific Stillwater branch. (The same tracks used today by the Minnesota Zephyr.) The "S - St. P" stenciled on its cab side stands for "Stillwater & St. Paul" - MTM's name for its Stillwater operation. Retired due to wheel wear, 101 has not run since the eighties.

During the summer of 2005, 101 came into the shop for mechanical repairs needed to make it operable again. This includes injector replacment, camshaft and rocker bearing replacement, a water pump rebuild, removing a bungled third-party stand-by heating system, and cab repairs. It will also need new wheels and paint. Once completed, it will serve on the Jackson Street caboose rides as a backup to Andersen Windows 3110.
